In the midst of the Staffordshire Moorlands in the heart of England hidden from view in a deep valley there lie two long forgotten villages, Upper Piddling in the Brook and Lower Piddling in the Brook. These two villages still boast a lord of the manor, Sir Percival P Piddling esquire and his spoilt and randy daughter Lady Penelope Piddling. The lord of the manor is looked after by his ever faithful butler Jack Tavern who also looks after Lady Penelope but in an entirely different way.

More importantly, living in this little community is a feisty and intelligent girl, Olga, the beautiful daughter of Jack Tavern, the landlord of the Piddling Arms, an ancient hostelry and community hub – some say gossip machine – of the village.

One day a party of university students arrive in the village and pitch their tents in the meadow adjacent to the Piddling Arms Tavern.

The project leader is Professor Peter Fairlow a prominent archaeologist and life-long bachelor.

To the surprise of everyone, a relationship forms between Olga and Peter despite the age difference of some twenty years.

In the best traditions of murder mystery stories Olga and Peter embark on not only a love affair but also as amateur detectives and they turn out to be surprisingly good at both.
